How to Find the Qibla Direction
The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah, which Muslims face during salah. Because the earth is a sphere, the qibla is not one fixed compass direction — it is the great-circle bearing from wherever you are standing to a single point at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. Someone in Karachi faces roughly west, someone in London faces south-east, and someone in New York faces north-east.
This page calculates that bearing from your location and, on devices with a magnetometer, rotates a live compass so you can simply turn until the Kaaba marker reaches the top. - Why does the Qibla from America point north-east and not south-east?
- Because the shortest path between two points on a sphere is a great circle, not a straight line on a flat map. From most of North America and Europe that great circle heads north-east before curving down towards Makkah. This is the direction the overwhelming majority of scholars consider correct.
- Do I need to allow location access?

- Why is my compass not moving?
- Some laptops and desktop browsers have no magnetometer, and iOS requires you to tap 'Enable live compass' to grant motion access. If the live compass is unavailable, the page still gives you the exact bearing in degrees, which you can use with any physical or phone compass.
- How accurate is the Qibla direction shown here?
- The calculation itself is accurate to a fraction of a degree. The limiting factor is your device: phone magnetometers can drift near metal, speakers, or magnets. Move away from electronics and rotate the device in a figure-eight to recalibrate if the reading looks wrong.
